“There’s finally a supermarket downtown!’’ exclaimed a woman standing outside of the newest Roche Bros. store in Downtown Crossing about 20 minutes before its grand opening.
Grand is not an overstatement here.
The 21st store in the Roche Bros. chain is located in the Burnham Building, the former location of Filene’s Department store, right next to the Downtown Crossing T station. A large crowd filled Summer Street on Wednesday morning, and confetti and a live band marked the opening of the doors.
After the Millennium Tower opens in 2016, Roche Bros. will do a 10,000 square foot expansion, attaching the market to the new apartment building.
This store opening comes after years of discussion over the need for there to be more grocery stores in Boston’s Downtown Crossing area.
