Downtown Crossing’s first large-scale supermarket, Roche Bros., will be opening April 29, the supermarket chain announced today.

Roche Bros. will occupy the neighborhood’s historic Burnham Building (site of the former Filene’s Basement) and anchor the rising Millennium Tower, set to open summer 2016.

The 25,000-square-foot market will have ready-to-eat food, a “Chop Shop’’ of fresh vegetables, a bakery, a deli, and online ordering and home delivery. Roche Bros., based in Wellesley, is a locally owned and family-operated grocery store.

Mirroring the city’s residential development boom, there are several new and planned supermarkets in the city. A 50,000-square-foot Whole Foods opened in the South End in January, anchoring the Ink Block condo and apartment development in the neighborhood.

In the West End, a 63,000-square-foot Star Market will be a key component of a $950 million mixed-use development project at TD Garden. In the Fenway, the New York-based Wegmans will be occupying the Landmark Center, and a Target with a full grocery section is also in the works.

“One of the things people have been asking for more than ever has been a supermarket,’’ Rosemarie Sansone, president of the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District, told Boston.com in March. “The need is coming up more than ever now.’’
