Home of the Week: A Maine log cabin to rival anything on ‘Yellowstone’

Some years back, Susan D. Murphy’s love for her native state of Maine and passion for skiing led to a log cabin created in British Columbia and shipped in pieces 2,500 miles to Newry, where it was rebuilt across the valley from Sunday River Resort.
“We bought the place when our children were young. We were a skiing family,’’ Murphy said of her husband, Arthur, and their now-adult children. “It was our second home.”
But, as the saying goes, time waits for no one, and the Murphys are now selling. The home comes furnished, including the electric recliners in the garage bay-turned-12-seat movie theater.

Perched at the end of a long circular driveway at the height of the 1.7-acre lot, the home features an exterior of hand-scribed ponderosa pine with tapered Swedish cope corner notching and burgundy trim. A portico of four logs set in concrete with faux stone faces lends the property a resort vibe, as does the wraparound porch, the hot tub, and the heated pool.
That vibe continues in the foyer, where whole logs support a winding stairwell and the walls are lined with stone. A bench stands ready for you to shed your boots. Don’t worry about cold feet; the flooring, an acid-washed cement in a mix of reds and browns, has radiant heat. Wash up in the half bath across the way.

Deeper into this Maine home, the architecture soars to great heights in the two-story, 278-square-foot great room. Take in the eight mountains of Maine’s Sunday River Resort through six plate-glass windows. An expansive wood-burning stone fireplace underscores the resort aesthetic.
The great room shares an open layout with the dining area (161 square feet) and the kitchen (210 square feet). It’s easy to spot the dining area. Just look for the faux moose antler chandelier. A slider just past the table opens to the wraparound deck, which offers a hot tub (in a gazebo) and grilling space.
Lower ceiling heights and an island with seating for four mark the start of the kitchen, which has track lighting on its exposed beams. Highlights include the commercial-grade stainless steel gas stove with 12 burners, the flattop and double ovens, the industrial-sized oven hood, granite countertops, and black cabinetry (some with glass doors).
There’s a 73-square-foot pantry/laundry room just off the kitchen, as well as the door to the breezeway that connects the home to the three-bay garage — one for the movie theater, one for a vehicle, and one for wood.
The final stop on this level is the primary suite, which runs front to back and has its own deck. Its 166-square-foot bedroom is on the backside of the great room chimney, which runs floor to cathedral ceiling in the suite. A propane fireplace inset warms the space, and natural light arrives via glass doors topped with a triangular window.

The suite’s 158-square-foot full bath includes a whirlpool tub clad in stone; a separate shower with multiple heads, glass doors, and a stone surround; and two vanities with stone counters.
Upstairs, a 134-square foot loft separates two bedroom suites (144 and 200 square feet). Each of the bedrooms comes with a shower-only bath that has a single vanity.
The walk-out lower level has 10-foot ceilings and continues that resort vibe with a wet bar, pool table, video game room, Concreate tile flooring, a family room with a woodstove, a bedroom, and a bonus room. Sliding doors on this level offer access to the patio, backyard, and heated pool.
The home has multi-zone hot water baseboard and radiant heat.
Murphy said her family has been renting out the house for $1,000 a night plus fees during the ski season.
