Former Uber driver found guilty of assaulting female passenger
A former driver for the ride-hailing company Uber has been found guilty of assaulting a female passenger in his car last year.
A Boston Municipal Court judge sentenced Abderrahim Dakiri, 31, of East Boston, to two years of probation after finding him guilty of a lesser charge of assault and battery during a bench trial on Friday, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said in a statement. Dakiri waived his right to a jury trial for which he was charged with indecent assault and battery.
Dakiri was also ordered by the judge to stay away from the victim, her Boston-area university, and her workplace, according to the DA’s office. If he fails to do so, or commits another assault, he could be sentenced to up to two-and-a-half years in prison.
Authorities said the 21-year-old victim requested the Uber ride for herself and her friends after a night out in February last year. Dakiri dropped her friends at their destination before he assaulted the young woman, according to the DA’s office.
“This incident was unacceptable,’’ Uber told The Boston Globe in a statement. “We immediately removed the driver from the Uber platform when we learned of it. Our thoughts are with the victim of this crime and our heart goes out to her.’’
Dakiri’s attorney, Michael A. Cioffi, declined to comment on Tuesday.
