Bernie and Phyl’s employee struck, killed by delivery truck in company parking lot

An employee of Bernie and Phyl’s Furniture was killed Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a delivery truck in the parking lot of the company’s Norton headquarters.

Norton police said the truck that struck Michael Hassett, 63, of Foxborough, was owned by NEHDS, a subcontractor that delivers furniture for the company. Police said first responders arrived at the parking lot around 1 p.m., and Hassett was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post on the Bernie and Phyl’s Facebook page said the company is mourning the loss of their “long-time’’ employee:

State police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s office are assisting with the investigation. A state police spokesperson said the agency’s collision reconstruction team was sent to the scene to help determine the sequence of events and “see if criminal charges are warranted.’’
