The US Chamber of Commerce president equates Elizabeth Warren with Steve Bannon
And the Massachusetts senator was quick to respond.
Elizabeth Warren probably wouldn’t like being put in the same category as Steve Bannon. In fact, Warren even once made an appeal to business executives to protest the former Breitbart leader’s White House appointment.
But in the eyes of the country’s top business lobbyist, Warren and Bannon are two of the same — representing different strands of populism.
“If we’re going to fight back against the extremes of both parties — of Steve Bannon and Elizabeth Warren — those people do not represent the best interests of this country,” Thomas Donohue, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said in a speech Wednesday, according to Bloomberg.
Donohue characterized Warren and Bannon as “ideological purists and strict partisans,” though recent reporting may somewhat dispute the latter when in comes to the Massachusetts senator.
In response, Warren took issue with the extremist label and suggested the attack by Donohue, who she called a “millionaire lobbyist,” had something to do with her recently introduced bill to penalize companies the fail to protect customer data.
“Here’s the basic problem in Washington. Big business lobbyists are so used to running the place that they label anyone willing to stand up to them as extreme,” she added.
Warren added that such attacks reassure her that she’s doing her job.
