Lyft users in Boston can get picked up by the classic Ghostbusters vehicle this weekend
Cue Ecto-1 siren.
Fans of the movie Ghostbusters in Boston, even those loyal to Uber, have a pretty good reason to use Lyft this weekend.
The ride-hailing company is giving users the option to be picked up by an Ecto-1—the iconic vehicle used in both the 1984 movie and the 2016 Ghostbusters remake, which was mostly filmed in Boston and is set to be released July 15—for free.
Lyft users simply have to toggle into “Ghost Mode” on their app before requesting their Ecto-1 ride, according to a release announcing the Lyft- and Sony Pictures-backed promotion.
Once inside the decked-out Cadillac, passengers will also have the chance to snack on Ghostbuster-themed Twinkies and Hi-C Ecto Cooler, the green, tie-in drink for the the original movie.
The promotion will be available on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time in Boston, as well as New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. According to Lyft, the original Ecto-1s used in the new film, as well as replicas, will be used in the promotion.
According to a Lyft spokeswoman, there will be five vehicles available in Boston, “a combination of the replicas and some additional wrapped cars with custom toppers (so they will also look like the Ecto-1s).” If passengers secure a ride through “Ghost Mode,” they are guaranteed to get a seat in one of those cars.
Last October, Lyft offered a similar promotion in New York on “Back to the Future Day,” featuring another hallmark fictional vehicle from the 1980s, the DeLorean.
The company also released a short video Wednesday of the Ecto-1 spinning through pink smoke.
(Fair warning: Video features gratuitous auto-tune siren soundtrack.)
