A tugboat intentionally grounded a barge off Narragansett, Rhode Island, on Sunday afternoon after it began taking on water and listing, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The tug — the Challenger — and barge were heading to Boston to deliver pilings to Logan Airport when the incident occurred, the Coast Guard’s Sector Southeastern New England said in a release.

“The tug proactively made the decision to intentionally soft ground the barge in the vicinity of Bonnet Shores in Narragansett, RI and prevent it from sinking or blocking the channel,” Coast Guard officials said. “The barge has successfully grounded with no pollution risks and remains in a non-distress status.”
