Missing Boston hiker found dead on N.H. trail

Officials say 61-year-old Kent Wood was unprepared for the 3-5 inches of snow that fell between Sunday and Monday.

A missing hiker from Boston was found dead Tuesday in New Hampshire’s Franconia Notch, officials from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department announced early Wednesday.

Kent Wood, 61, of West Roxbury, drove to the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln on Friday for a weekend of camping and hiking, and he began hiking Saturday amid warm temperatures and clear skies, according to a statement from the department

After not hearing from Wood for two days, his family became concerned and notified the department of an “overdue hiker” around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.

Authorities launched a search shortly afterward. At 7:41 p.m. that evening, conservation officers found Wood dead about 5.5 miles from his vehicle on a section of the Kinsman Pond Trail in Lincoln, according to Fish and Game.

Rescuers said Wood was prepared for warmer conditions and not for the 3 to 5 inches of snow that fell between Sunday and Monday in the Franconia Notch area.

“New Hampshire Fish and Game would like to remind hikers that it is still winter in the mountains with deep snow, precipitation, and freezing temperatures,” the department said.
