Man killed, officer shot during traffic stop in New Hampshire

The deadly officer-involved shooting occurred Monday evening in Ashland, New Hampshire.

A police officer was wounded and a man was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Ashland, New Hampshire, on Monday, according to Attorney General John Formella.

Members of the Ashland Police Department pulled over a car on Main Street Monday evening. The driver of the car then “produced a gun and engaged in an exchange of gunfire” with police, the officers reported to Formella’s office.

The man shot one Ashland officer, who was wounded. They were transported to a local hospital and were being treated.

The driver was shot during the exchange and was later pronounced dead at the scene, Formella said. No one else was injured during the incident.

None of the people involved were publicly identified. The name of the man who died will be released following notification of next of kin and the completion of an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The names of the officers involved “are being withheld pending the conclusion of formal interviews.” This is being done “pursuant to protocol,” Formella said.

Formella’s office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit are leading an ongoing investigation. Authorities are assessing whether any officers involved were using body-worn cameras or if cameras on the police cruisers captured any part of the deadly traffic stop.

More information is expected to be released after the autopsy, and authorities are looking into the “exact circumstances” surrounding the shooting, Formella said.
