From Maynard to MAYEnard: Mass. town to change name for Drake Maye on Super Bowl Sunday

The Massachusetts town is planning a one-day name change as New England heads to Super Bowl LX — and hopes its quarterback notices.

For one glorious Sunday, Maynard plans to put the “Maye” in game day.

On Feb. 8, as the New England Patriots take the field in Super Bowl LX, Maynard, Massachusetts may briefly disappear — replaced by the Town of MAYEnard, a tongue-in-cheek tribute to star quarterback Drake Maye.

The town of about 10,000 residents, located west of Boston, is seeking to temporarily change its name for the day, pending approval from its Select Board, according to a press release from town officials.

“It’s really exciting for our community to get the name of our small, little town out there,” Chairman of the Select Board David Gavin told Boston.com. “It’s just a positive vibe in a time in our world when we need some positivity.”

The rebrand is a nod to Maye, an MVP finalist and two-time Pro Bowl selection who led the Patriots to a 14-3 regular-season record and an AFC Championship title.

LOVE THE DRAKE:

“The whole thing is intended to be a community celebration of the Patriots making it to the Super Bowl and having fun with the name of our town,” Gavin said.

So far, he added, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I don’t think anybody ever expected the response that it has gotten,” he said.

Local businesses are also leaning into the moment, with the town hoping the attention will spread beyond the area, Gavin said.

Maynard’s one-day makeover isn’t a first for Massachusetts towns experimenting with temporary name changes.

Just three miles west, Stow garnered the spotlight in 2022 when it became a so-called “Dunkin’ Dessert” after both of its Dunkin’ locations closed within a month. The caffeinated crisis went viral after WBZ NewsRadio’s Matt Shearer posted a TikTok poking fun of the situation, sparking national media coverage. In July 2025, Stow celebrated the return of its beloved coffee chain by renaming itself “Dunkin’” for a day.

Back in MAYEnard, Gavin is holding out hope that the name change reached its intended audience.

“I’m hopeful that Drake Maye hears about it and actually says, ‘Hey, I want to go visit,’” Gavin said. “We would love to have him. We would welcome him any day.”
