Man still missing 3 weeks after escaping Gardner hospital

Leonard Mercury, who may also be going by Leonard Cummins or John Cummins, was last seen on Oct. 31.

A Massachusetts man is still missing three weeks after escaping from a Gardner Hospital.

Leonard Mercury, who may also be going by Leonard Cummins or John Cummins, was last seen leaving Heywood Hospital around 2 a.m. on Oct. 31, according to Gardner Police.

He escaped by breaking a window and jumping from the second floor, and was in mental and medical distress, his wife, Nicole La Guerre, wrote in a statement.

Previously:

He was headed in the direction of a nearby bike path wearing hospital clothing and no shoes, police say.

Since his disappearance, Mercury was declared missing and a K-9 unit tracked his scent to the edge of a lake, La Guerre said. Police, cadaver teams, and a private investigator have also searched for him, she said.

“Every night I go to sleep wondering if he is freezing somewhere, injured, confused, or if his body is lying in the woods or the lake. I wake up each morning terrified of what the next call might bring, or that no call will come at all,” La Guerre said.

Mercury is 57 years old, 6 feet tall, and weighs 195 pounds, according to police.

“I truly believe someone knows something, or someone saw something that night and doesn’t realize it,” La Guerre added.

Anyone with information regarding Mercury’s whereabouts is asked to call 911, or contact Gardner Police at 978-632-5600 or Westminster Police at 978-874-2117.
