Former Hopkinton deputy police chief John ‘Jay’ Porter found guilty of child rape

The assaults occurred while Porter was assigned to Hopkinton High School, where the victim was a student, as a school resource officer.

A former Hopkinton deputy chief of police was convicted Friday of three charges of rape of a child, the Middlesex district attorney’s office said.

The assaults took place in 2004 and 2005 while John “Jay” Porter was a school resource officer for Hopkinton Public Schools and the victim was a 15-year-old student.

During her ninth- and tenth-grade years at Hopkinton High School, the student would often go see Porter, the school resource officer, for support. In tenth grade, their relationship changed from one between a student and a trusted adult to a “flirtatious then sexual one,” the statement said.

“The defendant in this case abused his position of power to take advantage of and manipulate a child to gain her trust before sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions,” said District Attorney Marian Ryan in a statement.

In one incident, Porter volunteered to drive the girl home from school after she was excused early. He stopped at the station and exchanged his police vehicle for his personal one, and then stopped his car on the way to her house and began kissing and touching the victim all over her body before assaulting her, prosecutors said.

Later that year, after she had been babysitting at Porter’s Hopedale home, he drove her home to Hopkinton and on the way, he began discussing their relationship before assaulting her a second time.

Porter’s sentencing is scheduled for June 18. The investigation was conducted by the district attorney’s office and Massachusetts State Police.
