A man was arrested in Belmont Saturday night after he allegedly stole a pickup truck and trailer that was loaded with an Arlington/Belmont crew team’s racing sculls.
The Cambridge Police Department said the truck was reported stolen to Arlington police, and that it was involved in several hit-and-run crashes that caused non-life-threatening injuries and significant property damage.
“I think we crossed paths with this chaos driving home tonight between Cambridge and Somerville,” wrote a user on the r/Somerville Reddit page. “First we saw a confused group of people crowding a canoe that was in the middle of the street on Aberdeen Ave in Cambridge. Then we continued towards Somerville and we were stopped at an intersection and we could see there was already 2 people outside their mangled [cars] handling a car crash aftermath.”
The user said they heard a “tremendous clanging and scraping sound” as the trailer turned onto Huron Avenue with “sparks flying.”
Police located the truck along the Cambridge/Belmont line, where Cambridge and Belmont officers arrested the driver, an Arlington man. Police also said a Cambridge Police Department cruiser was involved in a crash and the officer was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. They were treated and have been released.
“I’m a mom of one of the rowers whose boat was snapped in half during this reckless incident,” wrote another Reddit user. “The team is devastated. It’s been a tough season for them due to all the rain. Yesterday’s race was originally scheduled for this entire weekend in Lowell but the river wasn’t safe (again) and it was canceled late Friday. Coaches worked hard to find another race they could participate in and the kids got up at 4am to get there and didn’t get home till 7pm—only for this to happen two hours later.”
Another parent wrote, “My son is a senior on the team too. Crew was a wonderful experience for him. He is very sad and angry right now.”
Police have not released any further information. The investigation is ongoing.
