A 3-year-old Maine boy who went missing from his family’s home Sunday was found dead later that day, officials said.
The boy’s aunt called the police at about 8:28 a.m. on Sunday to report him missing from the residence, on Exeter Road in Corinna, Maine.
The child was later found by his father “a distance from the family residence, outside in the snow,” Maine State Police said in a release Monday.
He had injuries that “appear to be consistent with exposure to the elements,” and by the time members of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and EMS arrived, he had died.
About 30 miles west of Bangor, the average high temperature for Corinna in January is just 27 degrees; the average low is 4 degrees.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. Though the incident is being investigated by the Major Crime Unit of the Maine State Police, officials believe “this is an isolated incident.”
“There [are] no public safety concerns,” State Police said.
