Boston Mayor Michelle Wu gave birth to her third child, a baby girl, Monday afternoon.

Mira Wu Pewarski checked in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and 20 inches, Wu’s office said in a statement. She arrived at 2 p.m. Monday, one day shy of her mother’s 40th birthday.

Wu and the baby are both in good health, and Wu is in touch with her senior staff, the mayor’s office said.

“Mayor Wu wishes to express her deepest gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and healthcare staff who made this possible for her family and who work every day to support so many families across the city,” the statement read.

Wu and her husband, Conor Pewarski, are also parents to two older sons, Blaise and Cass. The first woman and person of color elected mayor of Boston, Wu has said she doesn’t plan to take a formal maternity leave.

“Given the nature of the work and the job … I plan to continue serving in this role and working with my team so that we can make whatever adjustments, slight adjustments, might be needed,” she told The Boston Globe last summer.

Wu has spoken openly in the past about bringing her then-infant sons to work with her during her time as a Boston city councilor. Mira’s birth makes Wu Boston’s first mayor to deliver a child while in office.

“This is a job where, when important decisions have to be made, I’m there to make those decisions, whether I’m on vacation with my family or at whatever hour of the evening. Certainly, a lot of the how I do the job is going to change while I’m recovering and making sure that the baby and our family are settled,” Wu said last month, according to State House News Service.

She added: “I’ll be working from home a lot more … and I’ll be checking in with my team on a very regular basis, doing a lot more Zooms and trying to participate from there.”
