BOSTON (AP) — A Rhode Island man who exchanged gunfire with police during a bank robbery in Somerville has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, federal prosecutors say.

Daniel Rosado, 32, of Providence, entered the Middlesex Federal Savings Bank in Davis Square on May 1, 2019, fired a shot into the ceiling, threatened to shoot bank employees and customers, and ordered a teller to fill a backpack with money, according to a statement Monday from the U.S. attorney’s office in Boston.

While the teller filled the backpack, a customer left the bank and flagged down a marked police cruiser. An officer entered the bank, pointed his gun at the suspect and ordered him to freeze. In response, Rosado fired one shot at the officer and the officer shot back before Rosado left the building, prosecutors said.

A civilian attempted to tackle Rosado on the street and although he got away, he dropped the backpack, which contained a loaded gun and more than $500, authorities said. He was arrested several weeks later based on DNA and surveillance evidence.

Rosado was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty in February to charges including armed bank robbery.
