DA: Infant dies after being found unresponsive at Waltham daycare

No foul play is suspected in the death of the 5-month-old, according to authorities.

Authorities are investigating the death of a 5-month-old baby boy in Waltham. The infant was found unresponsive at a licensed daycare facility on Falmouth Road on Tuesday evening, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said in a statement. Daycare staff immediately administered CPR, and the boy was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Waltham and state police are investigating the incident, but the DA’s office said foul play is not suspected. A cause of death remains to be determined. In announcing the investigation into the boy’s death, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan shared that her office is now providing new resources to families who suffer the unexpected death of a child from the Massachusetts Center for Unexpected Infant and Child Death. The new policy was implemented by Ryan on Tuesday and followed a legislative hearing where families who had lost children to SIDS shared their experiences and how hard it was for them to find resources. “The loss of a child is the most devastating tragedy a family can endure,” Ryan said Wednesday in a statement. “We know that the trauma of this loss has immediate impacts on those who loved and cared for that child. Yesterday’s hearing exposed a gap in services that our office has the capability to address. I applaud the legislature’s efforts to codify the practice of providing these resources, but given the immediate need to address this problem we are acting now.”
