Dog day afternoon in court as pardoned pooch seeks reprieve
WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — This dog will have its day in court.
And the stakes are high: Dakota the Alaskan husky was pardoned from a death sentence by Republican Gov. Paul LePage last week. The punishment had been levied at a court hearing after the dog got loose and killed a neighbor’s pug last year.
A hearing on the case is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Waterville District Court. The Morning Sentinel reports the dog’s current owner is asking court to withdraw a decision ordering Dakota to be euthanized.
It’s unclear if LePage’s pardon is more than just symbolic.
Kennebec County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney says said the state wasn’t aware that Dakota had a new owner. The court scheduled another hearing to give the owner a chance to be heard.
