The Essex District Attorney’s office identified the man Tuesday as 57-year-old Robert Dapkus. Dapkus was a suspect in an armed robbery at the Porthole Pub last week and the officers were attempting to execute the search warrant at his Lynn Shore Drive apartment when the shooting occurred, authorities said.

A witness inside the apartment and the officers at the scene reported that Dapkus was armed and said he wasn’t going to be taken by police, according to the DA’s office. After forcing their way into the apartment, the officers fell back when they saw he had a gun. Three officers fired at him when he exited the apartment, still pointing a gun at them, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the DA’s office said.
