Yarmouth police searching for driver who fled scene after hitting pedestrian
Yarmouth police are looking for the driver of a car that fled the scene Monday night, after striking a pedestrian on a residential road.
Officials responded to a report around 10:12 p.m. of pedestrian being hit by a vehicle on Route 6A in Yarmouthport, according to police.
The responding officers said they found a 23-year-old woman lying on her side being comforted by a male friend. The woman’s friend told police they were walking along Route 6A, which has no sidewalks, with their backs to traffic when she was struck by a car, which continued east toward the town of Dennis.
The woman, who declined medical treatment, told police she believed she was hit by the front of the car. Police say it is also possible she was struck by a side mirror.
Police said the pair were both wearing all black at the time.
A witness, who was walking behind the two individuals, told police he “was about a couple of telephone poles or so behind the vehicle when he saw it jerk in its lane and then accelerate away.” Initially, he told police that he thought the car had hit a black trash bag. But when he got closer to the scene, he realized it was a person who had been hit.
The only details about the vehicle that the witness could provide police was that it was car, possibly a sedan, with square taillights. He also corroborated the victim’s friend’s account that the car was traveling toward Dennis.
Yarmouth police asked that anyone else with information call Patrol Officer Mary Gibney at (508) 775-0445 ext. 2324, or email them at [email protected].
They also reminded residents to be safe when walking along streets without sidewalks at night.
“Yarmouth Police remind all pedestrians to walk FACING traffic and always wear bright clothing and carry a flashlight at night,” the department said.
