After allegedly dragging officer with car, Tyngsborough man shot by police, in ‘very grave’ condition

A Tyngsborough man shot by police is in grave condition, after officials said he dragged an officer with the door of his car following a multi-town chase.

According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, the 27-year-old fled from a Tyngsborough officer who had tried to make a traffic stop at approximately 8:36 p.m. The suspect then led police on a chase down Route 3 into Chelmsford, where he exited the highway and pulled into a parking lot outside Sully’s, a local ice cream stand.

In the parking lot, a Chelmsford sergeant working a detail and attempted to stop the car, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said during a press conference at 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, per The Boston Globe.

As the officer approached, Ryan said the suspect began to back out of the parking lot and that the officer got caught on his door. The officer was then dragged “several yards,” according to the DA’s office, and struck a nearby police cruiser.

“Fearing for the safety of the Chelmsford officer,” the Tyngsborough officer shot the suspect twice, Ryan said. The man was then taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital, where he was said to be in “grave condition,” officials said. During the press conference early Sunday morning, Ryan said he was in “very grave” condition.

The Chelmsford officer who was dragged was treated at a local hospital and has since been released, officials said. According to the Globe, he received injuries to his arm, back, and torso.
