The incident happened just before 2 p.m., when a woman entered the lobby of the Worcester Police Headquarters to hand over a device she had discovered among a deceased relative’s belongings, police said.
An officer immediately took the grenade and removed it from the building, according to police. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called in to inspect the object, which was determined to be a “nonexplosive training device,” police said.
The lobby was reopened once the grenade was secured. A sergeant from the Massachusetts State Police Hazardous Device Unit disposed of the grenade safely.
