Heavy fire damages downtown Newburyport restaurant

Firefighters battled a 4-alarm blaze at Abraham’s Bagels and Pizza in downtown Newburyport on Tuesday.

The fire broke out at 4:15 a.m. One firefighter had to be evaluated for heat-related illness after working through the heavy smoke and flames coming from the downtown building, according to the Newburyport Fire Department.

Fire officials say the outdoor eating area was badly damaged and the rest of the building sustained heat, smoke, and water damage. The bagel shop, as well as a law office on the second floor of the building, will be uninhabitable until repairs can be made, officials say.

“This was a serious fire with heavy flames visible upon arrival, but firefighters made an aggressive, offensive attack and were able to spare 90 percent of the building from significant damage,” said Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire. “We were able to stop this fire before it did more damage to the downtown area.”
