Boston woman killed while driving in Indiana

The car crash in Indiana on Sunday that killed a Boston woman. Indiana State Police

A 22-year-old Boston woman was killed in a four-car crash in Indiana, according to Indiana State Police.

The accident happened just before 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Police say Margaret Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene after a tractor-trailer struck the rear of her SUV, pushing it under the semi-trailer she had been following. Her passenger, Christine Yip, 25, of Missouri, was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

The truck that hit Ryan was driven by 21-year-old Harvinder Singh Bhagtana from California, who, police say, “was going too fast for existing traffic conditions.” Traffic at the time was backed up for nearly six miles, according to police, and Bhagtana was unable to stop in time for the slowed traffic. Right before he struck Ryan’s car, police say Bhagtana knocked another car into the median.

Bhagtana was cited at the scene for speeding too fast to avoid a collision. There are no charges against Bhagtana at this time, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office.

He and the other drivers involved in the accident were not injured. The crash closed down the highway for five hours.
