After winning $10 million from a scratch ticket bought in Avon, a Massachusetts resident claimed their prize without revealing their identity Thursday, the Massachusetts State Lottery announced.
The winner bought the “$10,000,000 Premier Cash” instant ticket game at A-1 Market at 85 East Main St. in Avon. The grocery store will receive a $50,000 bonus for its ticket sale, lottery officials said.
Though Massachusetts is not among the states that automatically allow lottery winners to remain anonymous, this winner used a common legal maneuver to keep their identity private: They claimed the prize through the Welcome Spring Trust of Quincy, represented by trustee David Spillane, according to the lottery’s statement.
The winner chose a one-time cash payment of $6.5 million, before taxes, lottery officials said.
To achieve anonymity, a lottery winner in Massachusetts must create a trust, which is then represented by a trustee, according to Baker Law Group. The trustee is responsible for submitting the winning ticket, receiving the check, and depositing the funds into a bank account established for the winner.
The “$10,000,000 Premier Cash” instant ticket includes one more grand prize of $10 million that has yet to be awarded, lottery officials said.
