When Boston police officer Luis Lopez spotted smoke and flames from his Dorchester police station, he hopped into his car and tracked down the location blocks away.

What he did next, on the night of April 30, saved three lives and earned him national recognition.

He found the source of the smoke and flames, a raging fire at a three-story home.

“As I’m yelling at people to get back, people are yelling back at me that there are people inside the house,” he told CNN.

He was the first official on the scene because the fire hadn’t been reported yet, he told CNN.

He rescued three people from what he called a “fully engulfed” building. Firefighters showed up soon after.

“I always wondered why firefighters went into a burning building,” Lopez told CNN. “Now, I know. It’s not something you think about. You just react to the moment.”

The heroic actions of Lopez, a 20-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, were highlighted on CNN’s weekly segment about officers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
