A retired professor died in a weekend fire at her home
Elaine Donovan, a retired professor who taught economics at the University of Massachusetts Boston and helped found the women’s studies program at Merrimack College, died Saturday in a fire at her North Andover home, reports The Boston Globe.
Donovan, 63, died in a two-alarm fire Saturday after falling asleep while smoking a cigarette on her living room couch, according to the Globe. Her residence did not have working smoke alarms, reports the Globe. She retired from Merrimack College in 2013.
“It is a great loss,’’ Kathleen Shine Cain, the director of Merrimack’s writing center and a friend of Donovan’s, told the Globe.
