Suffolk University severs ties with longtime publicity firm led by George Regan

George Regan said the university severed ties with his company because of president Margaret McKenna’s personal agenda.

Suffolk University has severed ties with longtime publicity firm Regan Communications amid concerns about the firm’s outsized influence on the school’s governance. The move comes after a controversial week in which trustees attempted to force out president Margaret McKenna, reports The Boston Globe.

George Regan, of Regan Communications, has represented the university for 27 years. The company was paid $294,019 in the fiscal year 2014, reports the Globe. Alumni and students complained of Regan’s influence on the university’s governing board and took issue with Regan employee Julie Kahn acting as a Suffolk trustee. Another Regan employee works full time as the university’s senior associate director of public affairs, reports the Globe.

“President McKenna has chosen to blame me for her contentious relationship with the board, rather than acknowledging her own indefensible actions as the true reason for the board’s deep and valid concerns for her ability to lead the university,’’ Regan told the Globe.
