After closing hundreds of store locations following its 2023 bankruptcy, Bed Bath & Beyond is staging a comeback, but this time as a roommate.

The brand is opening nearly 100 locations nationwide in a combined duo with the Container Store, including three in Massachusetts and one in Rhode Island.

“This is a reset with purpose,” Jen Pape, senior vice president of stores at The Container Store, said in a statement. “We are actively reshaping our stores to make room for what’s next.”

Beginning in May, the locations will transition over to The Container Store + Bed Bath & Beyond format. The reimagined stores will combine The Container Store’s organizing solutions with Bed Bath & Beyond’s home assortment.

Bed Bath & Beyond announced in an April 2 regulatory filing that it plans to acquire and merge with The Container Store in a $150 million deal. The merger is expected to take place by mid-2026.

The merger marks the latest step in the company’s overhaul. Bed Bath & Beyond began restructuring after filing for bankruptcy in April 2023, following years of declining sales.

Soon after, Overstock.com bought the company’s assets for $21.5 million, rebranded the business as Beyond Inc., and initially focused on rebuilding the brand online.

Since then, the company has acquired buybuy BABY and the Kirkland’s and Kirkland’s Home brands. At the beginning of April, the company also said it plans on acquiring Lumber Liquidators, Cabinets To Go, Gracious Home, and Southwind Building Products.

By the end of 2025, Bed Bath & Beyond employed 389 full-time workers, according to its annual report.

In a similar timeframe, the Container Store filed for bankruptcy in December 2024, but maintained “business as usual” by keeping its stores open, according to a regulatory filing. It emerged from bankruptcy at the beginning of 2025 with more than 100 locations nationwide.

In a letter to Bed Bath & Beyond shareholders earlier this month, CEO Marcus Lemonis said that merging with the Container Store will help “fill critical gaps in both our retail and home services strategy.”

The Container Store, he wrote, will bring more than 100 locations representing 2.2 million square feet of premium retail space.

“I believe today marks the beginning of our next phase of growth,” he wrote.

Locations of the new rebranded stores:

  • Chestnut Hill, 55 Boylston St., MA
  • Natick, 1265 Worcester St., MA
  • Peabody, 210 Andover St., MA
  • Cranston, 150 Hillside Rd., RI
