Man convicted in Arborway crash that severely injured 2 people will serve 1 year in prison

Nikolas Papadopoulos, the man involved in a devastating Arborway collision that left two people severely injured, was sentenced to two years in prison.

Papadopoulos will only serve one year of that sentence, and the second year will be suspended for five years, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. Prosecutors sought two years with 18 months to serve and the balance of the sentence suspended for five years.

Papadopoulos was convicted for negligent operation of a motor vehicle after the life-changing Sept. 2013 accident. The accident left one victim unable to speak or move on his own and another victim paralyzed from the waist down.

Papadopoulos, from West Roxbury, was speeding down the Arborway in Jamaica Plain at up to 80 miles per hour when his car clipped the median strip and rolled, landing on the car driven by Kevin Cellucci, of Dorchester. Cellucci was hospitalized and placed in a medically-induced coma after the crash, and could no longer eat, stand, walk, or communicate on his own. His injuries require lifelong treatment.

Mark Delamere, a 14-year-old passenger in Papadopoulos’ car during the accident, was ejected from the car and suffered traumatic brain and spine injuries. He will never walk again.

Papadopoulos was 18 at the time of the accident.
