A controversial needle exchange program on the Cape is drawing concern
The AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod offers the program out of a home in Hyannis.
A Cape-style house in Hyannis is at the center of a controversy over a needle exchange program operating inside, reports the Cape Cod Times.
The building is the home of the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, which offers counseling, a food bank, infectious disease testing, and a hypodermic needle exchange program to about 600 people, according to the Times.
“Clean needles save lives,’’ AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod prevention adn education director Max Sandusky told the Times.
In September, the needle exchange program was issued a cease-and-desist order by the Barnstable Public Health Division, which said the program was operating illegally, reports the Times.
Barnstable Superior Court has issued a temporary restraining order against the town, allowing the program to continue operating. A preliminary injunction hearing Friday will decide the immediate fate of the program, reports the Times.
