Boston ranks third among metro areas for its number of foreign students, behind only New York and Los Angeles, reports The Boston Globe.

Boston has 47,895 foreign students, which is 4,094 more than last year. It’s part of a nationwide increase — the number of international students in the U.S. has grown at its fastest rate in 35 years, increasing 10 percent in the 2014-15 academic year to a record 974,926 students, according to the Globe.

Why are international students coming to Boston?

“It’s the kind of culture everybody can sink into,’’ Srikar Reddy, 22, an Indian graduate student studying engineering management at Northeastern, told the Globe.

Joey Hsu from Taiwan, also a Northeastern student, told the Globe he finds Boston “energetic, young, and friendly.’’
