Police: A Mass. couple used Facebook to steal thousands in a handyman scam

Police believe there could be more victims who haven’t come forward.

A Whitman, Mass. couple used Facebook to steal more than $10,000 from homeowners in Middleborough, Whitman, Weymouth, and Norwood during a handyman scam over the course of three months, reported The Enterprise.

Rachel Pattangall, 39, allegedly searched Facebook for homeowners seeking a handyman for repairs and then recommended her boyfriend, 35-year-old Stephen Smith, for the jobs. Smith would then show up at the homes, take deposits from homeowners that ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars, and, in many cases, never return, police told The Enterprise.

One victim reported Smith to the Middleborough Police Department earlier this month after he neglected to do a job he was hired for in August.

“He admitted he stole everything,’’ Middleborough police detective Simonne Ryder told The Enterprise.

Smith was charged with three counts of larceny by false pretense over $250, and both Smith and Pattangall were charged with conspiracy, according to The Enterprise.
