Police Arrest Armed Man Wearing Body Armor on BU Campus

Campus police officers spotted the man near a helipad at Boston Medical Center.

Police arrested an armed man wearing body armor Saturday afternoon near a helipad on the Boston University campus, a spokesperson for the school’s police department told Boston.com.

The man was arrested around 4:25 p.m., after Boston Medical Center special police officers spotted the armed man in a restricted area, Boston University police Lt. Anastasios Giannopoulos said.

Boston Police Department spokesperson Officer McGuire confirmed “at least one’’ firearm was recovered from the suspect. The man’s identity was not immediately available, according to McGuire, who added that details were limited as both departments continute to investigate.

The helipad is at ground level near Boston Medical Center, located on the BU campus. A spokesperson for the hospital referred questions to Boston Police, but said that the hospital was open and operating normally Saturday evening.

The arrest comes as the city is on alert because of the Boston Marathon on Monday and the recent anniversary of 2013 bombings at the race.
