Fill ‘Er Up: Get a Free Coffee on New Year’s Eve From MassDOT

You don’t want to get stuck in this: Travelers sit in gridlock on I-90 westbound on the day before Thanksgiving, 2010. Dina Rudick/The Boston Globe

If you’re feeling drowsy during your travels on New Year’s Eve and the first day of the new year, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has your back: You can grab a free coffee at any MassDOT rest stop between 10 p.m. on December 31 and 5 a.m. on January 1.

So clutch. It’s almost enough to make up for the nightmare that is the Pike.

Another bright spot? The MBTA will provide “rush hour level service’’ from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, and won’t collect fares after 8 p.m.

Besides the usual reminders to wear your seatbelt, turn on your headlights, and never drink and drive, the department also has some tips to avoid the worst of the traffic: Hit the road early in the morning or after 8 p.m., check out the conditions on MassDOT’s traffic cam, and expect congestion near the dreaded exit to I-84, the I-95 and I-495 Turnpike interchanges, and I-495 and I-93 northbound if you’re heading up to New Hampshire.

MassDOT also warns that the HOV Zipper Lane on I-93 will not be in service on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of this week. And, tragically, the RMV will be closed on New Year’s Day.
