Manchester Bound Flight Diverted Due to Engine Trouble

An American Airlines flight headed for Manchester, N.H., was sent back to Philadelphia International Airport on Monday when the plane experienced an “engine issue,’’ airline spokeswoman Victoria Lupica confirmed to Boston.com.

Republic Airlines flight 5927 was being operated as a US Airways Express flight and was about ten minutes into its journey when the engine problem occurred. The Embraer 175 jet had left the ground, but landed safely with 53 passengers and three crew members on board. Republic Airlines spokesman Scott Thien told Boston.com that passengers “deplaned normally at the gate’’ and were accommodated on other flights. Maintenance mechanics are now investigating the problem.

A New Hampshire journalist tweeted this photo, which is a screenshot from a video he says a passenger captured when flames began shooting from one of the aircraft’s engine:

Lupica and Thien said that the airlines could not immediately comment on the nature of the engine issue because it was still under review.
