FBI probed Providence vocational school
The FBI investigated a Providence high school last year following allegations that developmentally disabled students were placed in a ‘‘sheltered workshop’’ where they were paid little or no wages for manual labor. WPRI-TV reported Friday that the FBI investigated whether federal funds were misused at the Birch School. The FBI’s involvement was acknowledged in a report to the City Council. The US Justice Department reached a settlement last year with the city and state over violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act at the school and a program in which many students were later employed. City spokesman David Ortiz said the FBI worked with city police on the investigation. He said the police investigation ended last month after no evidence was found that federal funds were misused.
