Faculty oppose arming University of Rhode Island police
The University of Rhode Island’s faculty union is opposing plans by the school’s administration to arm campus police. The Providence Journal reported that the union said research has not proven that armed officers increase campus safety. The state Board of Education plans to vote May 20 on whether to allow Rhode Island’s three public higher education institutions to arm their police forces. State lawmakers are also reviewing legislation on the issue. URI administrator Robert Weygand told the board this week that it took armed South Kingstown officers five minutes longer than unarmed campus police to respond to an April 4 report of a gunman.
