A Boston sex offender with a lengthy criminal record was back in court Thursday after prosecutors say he hid in a women’s bathroom stall on Northeastern University’s campus and spied on an employee who came in to use the restroom.
Brandon Awogboro, 29, pleaded not guilty to charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and disorderly conduct. His defense attorney declined to comment on the charges.
Awogboro, a Level 2 sex offender convicted of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older, had previously been issued a no-trespass order for Northeastern’s campus, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
A spokesperson for Northeastern University did not immediately respond to a Boston.com request for comment.
Prosecutors allege that a man — later identified as Awogboro — triggered an alarm at Northeastern shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday as he exited through an emergency door in the dining area of Stetson East residence hall.
Campus police responded and learned from food service employees that Awogboro had been in the women’s restroom for more than an hour, the DA’s office said in a news release. One staff member allegedly told officers she noticed Awogboro craning his neck under a divider to peer into her stall as she used the restroom.
Surveillance footage purportedly showed Awogboro leaving the women’s restroom and walking out onto Huntington Avenue. Prosecutors said he sprinted directly into one of the officers who tracked him down outside.
“The officer brought Awogboro to the ground, where he thrashed his legs and attempted to bite officers, eventually placing his mouth on one of their holstered firearms,” the DA’s office said.
Prosecutors said Awogboro, who was wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time, was on probation after serving one-and-a-half years in the Suffolk County House of Correction on a 2024 breaking-and-entering charge. Court records indicate a judge has since revoked his probation in light of the new charges.
Judge David Poole set $500 bail on the new counts Thursday but revoked Awogboro’s bail on a separate case out of Roxbury, where he faces charges of assault and battery on a family or household member and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Awogboro is due back in court May 26.
Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden praised Northeastern police officers and food service employees who helped with the arrest.
“It isn’t difficult to imagine the shock and fear this employee must have experienced through this man’s actions, particularly in a setting where privacy is expected and deserved,” Hayden said in a statement. “I’m grateful no officers were injured when the defendant became violent.”
