Man enters Salem police station, confesses to murdering wife, officials say

A man walked into the Salem police station early Tuesday morning and confessed to murdering his wife, authorities say.

Douglas Steeves, 50, was charged with murder in connection with the strangulation of his 48-year-old estranged wife, according to Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office.

He entered the police station at about 3:40 a.m.

“He told the desk sergeant he had just killed his wife,” Salem Police Capt. Conrad Prosniewski told Boston.com.

Police found the woman unresponsive at her Chandler Street home, Prosniewski said. She was taken to a Salem hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Steeves is believed to be homeless, according to the DA’s office.
