Middle schoolers charged after police say they reported a false bomb threat

Two Dudley middle schoolers have been charged with reporting a false bomb threat after police say they called in a fake threat to their school last month.

The Dudley Middle School students, ages 10 and 11, used an online-based computer program to place the automated call to the school on June 3, according to the Dudley Police Department. The call caused officials to evacuate the building and all students were relocated to the high school while emergency responders, school officials, and a member of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad searched the building. No suspicious devices were found and school resumed early that afternoon, police said.

Police filed charges against the kids this week at a juvenile district court in Dudley. They are charged with disturbing a school assembly and reporting a false bomb threat.

“Threats of this nature are given serious attention in today’s world,” said Dudley Police Chief Steve Wojnar. “Anyone participating in these activities can face serious charges.”

A false bomb threat is a felony and carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, according to police.

The kids are scheduled to appear in court later in July, police said.
