Police have person of interest in hit-and-run involving NH state trooper

"It's a matter of inches, and it could be life or death."

Police say they have identified a person of interest in the hit-and-run accident involving a New Hampshire state trooper on Sunday morning.

Trooper Ryan Hickey was struck by a car on Everett Turnpike in Merrimack, N.H. early Sunday while assisting another trooper with an arrest, said police. He had just placed three people into his cruiser when a car traveling southbound hit Hickey on the left side of his body, police say. He remains hospitalized with injuries that are not life threatening.

“He’s incredibly lucky,” said Captain Matthew Shapiro of the New Hampshire State Police. “It’s a matter of inches, and it could be life or death.”

Police have been examining video footage from one of the police cruisers, they say, and the car believed to have been involved in the crash has been located.

Hickey, who is engaged, has served the New Hampshire State Police department for a year and was previously an officer in Derry, N.H. for two years.

Police say there is no one in custody and anyone with information about the crash should contact police at 603-223-4381.
