Woman shot in her car after church, suspect caught 6 days later

Police arrested a man who allegedly shot a woman while she sat in her car after leaving church, authorities say.

It was just after 6:30 p.m. on May 13 when police say the 52-year-old woman was “grazed by an errant bullet” inside her car after exiting Freedom in Christ Ministry in Dorchester. She was treated at Boston Medical Center for her injuries.

Boston police say they used surveillance video to identify and arrest James Martin, 22, of Boston on Thursday evening in connection with the crime. Police say they tracked down Martin on a Dorchester street, but he fled when they approached. Police chased him down and arrested him.

Martin was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (a gun), and unlawful possession of a firearm.

He will be arraigned in Dorchester Municipal Court on Friday.

Said Commissioner William Evans about the incident, “Firstly, I want to extend my well wishes to the victim in this case as she continues to heal and recover from her injuries. Secondly, I want to commend my officers for the dogged determination that led to today’s arrest. The suspect in this case showed an utter and complete disregard for the safety of others and, without question, our city’s a safer place with him off the streets.”
