Celtics President Rich Gotham Just Loves Thanksgiving Leftovers

Rich Gotham Globe Staff

When Rich Gotham hosts Thanksgiving in Medfield, the Celtics president keeps things traditional.

“We don’t really do anything out of bounds,’’ Gotham said. “If there’s one thing that’s a little less traditional…every year we go with some turnip, which is a personal favorite of mine which you don’t see on every menu. I’m a root vegetable guy.’’

The Gothams mash the turnip and cut it with potatoes and butter, but Rich favors Black Friday to Thanksgiving for one reason: leftovers.

“The real home run for me is the day after Thanksgiving when you take the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and you put it on a biscuit the for that leftover lunch,’’ Gotham said. “It’s actually my favorite part of Thanksgiving.’’

Gotham plans to have between 10 and 15 folks at his table, including his eldest daughter, who’s returning from her freshman year at the College of William & Mary in Virginia.

“I’m really looking forward to her coming home,’’ Gotham said.

His other children, a daughter in her junior year of high school and a son in seventh grade, will hopefully partake in some Gotham family traditions like watching Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and enjoying an outdoor activity.

“There’s a lot of young cousins, so sometimes we’ll hike along the Charles or get the kids out in the yard, shooting hoops or playing soccer,’’ Gotham said.

Gotham is quick to point out that the Celtics are also part of the Thanksgiving routine for his family, since the team typically plays a game right before and right after the holiday.
