New Movies Streaming

“The Brutalist” (2024)

Brady Corbet’s 218-minute Oscar-winning opus, about a fictional architect (Adrien Brody) who escaped the Nazis to begin a new life in America, is a towering work of art. Shot in Vistavision, Corbet’s $10 million movie looks like a $200 million one, and the filmmaker’s ambition is matched only by Brody’s Lazlo Toth, who begins work on almost impossibly large building for a rich Pennsylvania patron (Guy Pearce).

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” (2023)

If you’re headed to theaters next weekend for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” you absolutely must watch this seventh “M:I” film first. Though the franchise usually tells separate stories, this one – about a rogue AI taking over the world – directly ties into the upcoming blockbuster. “Dead Reckoning” has some of the best stunts in the series to date, and it’s a lot less convoluted than the upcoming “Final Reckoning.” (You can read my full review of “Final Reckoning” here.)

“Paddington in Peru” (2025)

Paddington Bear (Ben Whishaw) feels distinctly British, but his real roots lie in Peru, where he returns in this third film. The marmalade-loving bear brings the whole Brown family to visit Aunt Lucy, who has now settled in a Home for Retired Bears. “Paddington in Peru” doesn’t quite measure up to the incredible highs of “Paddington 2” — one of the best family movies of the 2010s — but it still has plenty of heart and cheeky English humor.

“Poker Face”

Natasha Lyonne (“Orange is the New Black”) is back for a second season of Rian Johnson’s anthology mystery series as Charlie Cale, an itinerant amateur detective whose superpower is being able to instantly tell when someone is lying. “Poker Face” feels like a throwback to the days of “Columbo,” where half the fun was watching Peter Falk chew scenery on his way to unraveling the case. Each episode brings a new group of star cameos — Cynthia Erivo, John Mulaney, Giancarlo Esposito, and Katie Holmes are just a few of the many familiar faces who show up — and Lyonne anchors it all with her affable but eccentric sensibility.

How to watch: “Poker Face” Season 2 is streaming on Peacock.

“Welcome to Wrexham”

With their purchase of struggling Welsh soccer club Wrexham A.F.C. in 2020, Ryan Reynolds and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney have created a perpetual triumphant sports moment machine. The club’s meteoric rise from the lowest rungs of the English football hierarchy has turned more Americans on to soccer than ever thanks to “Welcome to Wrexham,” the FX documentary series chronicling the duo’s takeover of the club and the long-suffering residents of the tiny UK town that have supported the footballers through thick and thin.

Close followers of English football will know exactly what happens on the pitch during Season 4. But the behind-the-scenes drama and the heartfelt stories of Wrexham’s residents will make “Welcome to Wrexham” a worthwhile watch for fans and non-fans alike.

How to watch: “Welcome to Wrexham” Season 4 is streaming on Hulu.
