It’s happening: After years of rumors, a spinoff of beloved TV series “The Office” is officially debuting this fall on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock.
Before you break out your Michael Scott “World’s Best Boss” mug for a celebratory toast, be aware that the upcoming series “The Paper,” from “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “Nathan For You” creator Michael Koman, has nothing to do with the Scranton, Penn. paper company — though the new show does feature a beloved character from “The Office.”
Here’s everything we know about “The Office” spinoff “The Paper.”
On “The Paper,” the same fictional film crew that selected Dunder Mifflin as its documentary subject on “The Office” heads to a Midwestern newspaper in Toledo, Ohio called The Truth Teller for its next project.
“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters,” reads Peacock’s official synopsis of the new series.
“It’s been more than 10 years since the final episode of ‘The Office’ aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” said Lisa Katz, President, NBCUniversal Entertainment, in the press release. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
When “The Paper” was first announced back in 2024, NBC also announced the show’s two leads: Irish actor Domnhall Gleeson, known for his roles in the “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” film franchises, and Sabrina Impacciatore, best known for “The White Lotus”.
This week, NBC added a big new name to the list: Oscar Nuñez, who played accountant Oscar Martinez on “The Office,” is reprising his role for the new series. (Every business needs an accountant, right?)
During an NBCUniversal upfront presentation for advertisers, Gleeson (standing with Impacciatore and Nuñez) told the audience that the trio were part of “a wonderful ensemble cast of underdog characters that are banding together to keep journalism alive.”
“My character has the unwavering optimistic belief that he can turn The Truth Teller to the glory of its heyday,” Gleeson added, per Entertainment Weekly.
The rest of the ensemble cast includes Alex Edelman (“Just For Us”), Chelsea Frei (“Animal Control”), Melvin Gregg (“American Vandal”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“A League Of Their Own”), Tim Key (“Alan Partridge”), and Ramona Young (“Never Have I Ever”).
The only actor we know for sure won’t be back is Acton native Steve Carell, who has said repeatedly that he will not be reprising his role as Michael Scott. Others, like actresses Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, have visited the set of “The Paper,” but there has been no news about additional roles for “The Office” alums beyond Nuñez.
Though NBCUniversal has not picked a specific date for “The Paper,” the company revealed that the comedy will premiere on Peacock in September 2025.
