WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND

New Movies Streaming

“CHAOS: The Manson Murders”

At this point, Netflix has saturated the true crime market with replacement-level documentaries. But when a filmmaker with the pedigree of Errol Morris (“The Thin Blue Line,” “The Fog of War”) is attached to a project, it’s always worth a watch.

Morris turns his lens on the Manson family in “CHAOS: The Manson Murders,” taking a deeper look at the links between the CIA, LSD, and the cult that formed around Charles Manson. Rather than stretch the subject out into an eight-part series, Morris only needs 96 minutes to answer, to the best of his ability, how Manson managed to convince his acolytes to wantonly murder their peers in Hollywood.

How to watch: “CHAOS: The Manson Murders” is streaming on Netflix.

“Heretic”

Two young missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) are drawn to the home of a potential convert (Hugh Grant). Though they are forbidden from entering the homes of men without another woman present, they do so anyway. Big mistake.

Like so many A24 horror movies, “Heretic” is more about creating a foreboding atmosphere than pummeling you with jump-scares. Grant is having the time of his life, subjecting the women to his own twisted belief system and disguising moral parables with references to Monopoly, Wendy’s, and Jar Jar Binks. If you liked Grant’s cartoonish villain performance as Phoenix Buchanan in the sublime “Paddington 2,” “Heretic” is worth a watch.

How to watch: “Heretic” is streaming on Max.

New TV Shows Streaming

“Celtics City”

With no apologies whatsoever to the Los Angeles Lakers, the story of the Boston Celtics franchise is the most fascinating tale in NBA history. It makes perfect sense, then, that Bill Simmons has taken a page from his “30 for 30” playbook to create this nine-part series on the team, interviewing everyone from Bob Cousy to Jayson Tatum about what it means to wear the shamrock.

Even at 96 years old, Cousy is a sharp, funny interview. Surprisingly, so is the typically press-shy Robert Parrish. And it’s heartwarming to see archival interviews from the likes of Red Auerbach and Bill Russell.

How to watch: “Celtics City” is streaming on Max, with new episodes debuting Mondays.

“Daredevil: Born Again”

It’s been seven long years since Netflix surprisingly pulled the plug on its “Daredevil” experiment, canceling not only its flagship Marvel series but spinoffs “The Punisher,” “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist,” and Luke Cage” as well. All of the major characters and actors involved in the original are back, including blind litigator Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), villain Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), and vigilante Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal).

While you don’t necessarily have to catch up on the whole Daredevil universe to jump back in with “Daredevil: Born Again,” the action picks up right where Season 3 left off, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

How to watch: “Daredevil: Born Again” is streaming on Disney+.

“The Righteous Gemstones”

Sadly, Danny McBride’s evangelical comedy is coming to an end with its fourth season, meaning we only have a few short months to enjoy Kelvin Gemstone’s extremely heterosexual God Squad, Judy Gemstone’s awful hymns, and of course Uncle Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers.

Like most McBride-created shows (“Eastbound and Down,” “Vice Principals”), the characters that populate “The Righteous Gemstones” aren’t especially sympathetic. In fact, the Gemstone family of televangelist hucksters are some of the most spoiled, spiteful, and downright kooky characters on TV. Even patriarch Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), easily the most sympathetic of the bunch, doesn’t come out looking like an angel. But Lord have mercy, this show is funny

How to watch: “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4 is streaming on Max, with new episodes airing Sundays.
