Former Boston news anchor named host of ‘CBS Evening News’
In the 69 years that CBS Evening News has been on the air, only a select few have served as full-time hosts of the show. Now, a former anchor for WHDH (Channel 7) is set to follow in the footsteps of Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, and Katie Couric.
Jeff Glor, a CBS news correspondent since 2007, will take over as the full-time host of CBS Evening News, according to an announcement from the network on Wednesday.
“Jeff is a thoughtful, probing journalist with the versatility to anchor in any circumstance — from daily reporting to the most significant events of our time,” CBS News President David Rhodes said in a statement. “In his more than 10 years at CBS News, Jeff has earned the trust of viewers and his colleagues. He represents the best journalistic values and traditions that will carry the Evening News into a digital future.”
A graduate of the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, Glor worked as a reporter and weekend evening news anchor for WHDH from 2003 to 2007. According to his alumni bio, Glor covered major news stories such as the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005 for Channel 7. Glor also received an honorary degree in journalism from Suffolk University, where he gave the undergraduate commencement speech in May 2011.
Glor will fill the vacancy left by Scott Pelley, who was relieved of his anchor duties in June. Anthony Mason, who has served as interim anchor for the last five months, will continue in his role as CBS News senior national correspondent and co-host of CBS This Morning: Saturday, according to the network.
