Johnny Depp’s upcoming Black Mass catches Whitey Bulger, leader of the infamous Winter Hill Gang, just as things start to get complicated.
John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) signs his old pal Bulger on as an informant with the FBI, while brother Billy Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch) is on his political A-game. The bodies just keep dropping as law enforcement turns the other way. It gets messy.
Warner Bros. just released featurette “An Unholy Alliance,’’ detailing where their plot picks up: Black Mass opens in the late ‘70s, following Bulger’s turf war with the Italian mafia, and the subsequent corruption of FBI as their “alliance’’ begins to spin out of control.
“In the beginning, Jim was a small-town player, really only mattered in Southie,’’ explains Jesse Plemons as Kevin Weeks. “Next thing you know, he’s a goddamn kingpin. You know why? Because the FBI let it happen.’’
The bits of film that we’ve seen look terrifying, and Depp is already preparing for what’srumored to be a successful stretch at awards season. We have until Sept. 18 for the film to drop in theaters, but for now, here’s all you need to take you into the weekend:
